My Personal Experience in Some of the Safest Cities in the World

While rankings and statistics give us a solid understanding of which cities are considered the safest, nothing beats firsthand experience. As someone who has traveled extensively, I have personally visited about 50% of the cities on this list, including Singapore, Amsterdam, and Berlin, and I can confidently say that these rankings are well deserved.

Singapore

Singapore – Safety and Efficiency Like No Other

If there’s one city where you never have to worry about safety, it’s Singapore. The moment you step off the plane at Changi Airport, you realize just how well-organized and efficient this city is. I could walk around at any hour of the day or night, whether in the heart of Marina Bay or in a quiet neighborhood, without feeling the slightest sense of danger.

What impressed me the most was how seriously Singapore takes security. From high surveillance to strict laws, the city has practically eliminated petty crimes like pickpocketing. Public transport, including the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system, is incredibly safe, clean, and reliable. Even as a foreigner, I never once felt uncomfortable, lost, or threatened while using public transport or exploring the city alone.

If you ask anyone who has been to Singapore, they will tell you the same thing—it’s one of the cleanest, safest, and most disciplined places in the world. The only downside? The laws can be quite strict. But that’s probably one of the reasons why the city is so safe in the first place.

Amsterdam – Laid-Back, Safe, and Well-Connected

Amsterdam has a reputation for being a fun, open-minded, and lively city, but what many people don’t realize is how safe it actually is. When I first visited Amsterdam, I expected it to be chaotic due to the number of tourists, but I was surprised at how well-structured and secure everything felt.

One of my favorite things about Amsterdam is that biking is the primary mode of transportation. Unlike many big cities where you constantly have to watch out for reckless drivers, Amsterdam’s roads are designed with pedestrians and cyclists in mind. I biked through the city, even at night, without ever feeling unsafe.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing can happen in crowded tourist areas, but compared to other major cities, Amsterdam is incredibly secure. I also found the people to be extremely friendly and helpful, which added to the feeling of safety. Whether I was walking along the beautiful canals, exploring the museum district, or grabbing a late-night snack, I always felt at ease.

Berlin – Safe, Yet Lively and Full of Energy

Berlin

Berlin is one of my favorite cities in Europe, not just for its culture and history, but also because of how safe and welcoming it is. Unlike some other big European capitals, Berlin doesn’t feel overwhelming or intimidating.

I spent a lot of time wandering through historic sites like the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, and East Side Gallery, and at no point did I feel unsafe. Even in the more alternative areas like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, which have a vibrant nightlife, I never encountered any issues.

One of the things that make Berlin stand out is its strong police presence and well-maintained public spaces. The public transport system (U-Bahn and S-Bahn) is well-lit, clean, and very safe, even at night. I took late-night trains multiple times and never felt uncomfortable.

The only downside I noticed is that Berlin, like any major city, does have some minor issues with petty crime, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. However, as long as you stay aware of your surroundings, the city feels very safe, even for solo travelers.

Final Thoughts – The Rankings Are Spot On

Having traveled to so many places, I can confidently say that Singapore, Amsterdam, and Berlin fully deserve their places on the list of the world’s safest cities. Each of them has a unique atmosphere, but they all share some common factors that contribute to their safety:

  • Efficient law enforcement
  • Well-planned infrastructure
  • Reliable public transport
  • Low violent crime rates
  • A strong sense of community and public order

While no city is 100% crime-free, these places stand out as some of the best destinations for travelers who prioritize safety. If you are planning to visit or move to any of these cities, rest assured that you will feel secure and comfortable exploring them… just as I did.
