I’ve got a quick question. I’m planning to stay at a hotel with a friend who made the reservation under their name. My name isn’t on the booking at all. Will I still be able to check in by myself if I arrive earlier, or will that be a problem? Should I ask my friend to add my name to the reservation beforehand? Thanks!
Great question. I’ve actually had a few people ask me this before, and it’s something that can easily catch you off guard if you’re not prepared.
So here’s the deal. If your name isn’t anywhere on the reservation and you show up before the person who made the booking, you’ll likely run into a problem. Most hotels won’t let you check in unless your name is on the reservation. It’s not just about rules. I think it’s more about safety and making sure no one is pretending to be someone else.
That being said, you still do have a few options. Let’s take a look at them one after the other.
Option 1: Add your name to the reservation
This is the cleanest and safest move. Just ask your friend to call or email the hotel and request that your name be added as an additional guest. Some booking platforms even allow this during the reservation process.
Option 2: Authorized early check-in
If your friend can’t add your name for some reason, they can call the hotel and let them know you’ll be arriving earlier. If the hotel agrees and notes that you’re allowed to check in, you should be fine. But don’t take this for granted. I strongly recommend that you always confirm directly with the hotel.
Option 3: Booking notes
When booking through platforms like Booking.com or Agoda, there’s usually a section for special requests. That’s a great place to add your name or a note that another guest will arrive before the primary one.
Kojo’s Travel Tip
It’s always smart to call the hotel ahead of time. Don’t assume the rules are the same everywhere. Hotels in different countries (or even different cities) can have very different policies. One quick phone call can save you a lot of frustration at check-in.
Hope this helps. Safe travels!
