What Travellers Should Know

Severe travel warnings

Afghanistan remains subject to some of the strongest government travel warnings. Travellers should check the advice issued specifically for their nationality before considering a journey.

Visa requirements

A visa is generally required for foreign travellers. Visa procedures can be complicated, and documents issued by some Afghan diplomatic missions abroad may not necessarily be recognised by the authorities controlling entry.

Passport validity

Passport requirements depend on nationality and circumstances. Travellers should confirm current requirements before departure; some official guidance specifies at least six months of validity beyond arrival.

Border crossings

Do not assume that an Afghan land border crossing is open. Several crossings are closed, while others can be affected by political tensions, security incidents or clashes between Afghan and neighbouring forces.

Limited consular assistance

Some countries no longer maintain functioning embassies in Afghanistan. This can severely limit the assistance available to their citizens if they are detained, injured or otherwise require emergency help.

Latest Travel Changes

Afghanistan-Pakistan border tensions

Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have resulted in clashes in border regions. Border conditions can change quickly, and individual crossings may close with little notice.

Aviation remains limited

International commercial flights operate, but travellers have fewer options than at major international destinations and should verify flights directly with airlines before travelling.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, the status of your intended airport or land crossing, current Afghan entry requirements and the travel advice issued by your own government before making travel arrangements.

Be aware that border crossings and transport arrangements can change at short notice and that consular assistance for foreign nationals may be extremely limited.
