What Travellers Should Know

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Many foreign visitors need to obtain an Algerian visa before travelling. Limited visa-on-arrival arrangements may be available for certain organised trips to southern Algeria.

Passport validity

Travellers should check the passport requirements that apply to their nationality. Current UK guidance requires British travellers to have at least six months of passport validity from the date of arrival.

Algeria-Morocco border

The land border between Algeria and Morocco remains closed. Travellers should not plan an overland itinerary that depends on crossing directly between the two countries.

Southern and border regions

Several governments warn against travel to areas near Algeria’s borders with countries including Libya, Mali, Niger and Mauritania because of terrorism and kidnapping risks. Additional warnings apply to parts of the border with Tunisia.

Yellow fever

Travellers arriving from countries where yellow fever transmission is a risk may be required to provide proof of yellow fever vaccination.

Latest Travel Changes

Regional travel warnings remain in place

Significant security warnings continue to apply to several remote and border regions of Algeria. Travellers planning journeys outside the main northern population centres should check the advice for their exact route.

Morocco land border remains closed

The Algeria-Morocco land border remains closed. Travellers planning to visit both countries should arrange an alternative route rather than expecting to cross overland.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, airport information, Algerian visa and entry requirements, the status of your intended border crossing and the travel advice issued by your own government before departure.

If travelling into southern Algeria or near an international border, check the specific regional security situation before beginning your journey.
