Belarus Status
DISRUPTION
Travel to Belarus is significantly affected by international aviation restrictions, border restrictions and serious government travel warnings. Entry remains possible on some routes, but travellers should carefully check current flight, border, visa and security conditions before travelling.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Limited flight options
International flights continue from Belarus, but sanctions and airspace restrictions have substantially reduced connections with Europe. Travellers may need to route through countries where direct connections with Belarus remain available.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality and how you enter Belarus. Belarus has extended temporary visa-free entry arrangements for citizens of a number of European countries through 31 December 2026, subject to specific conditions.
Passport requirements
Travellers should check the passport requirements applying to their nationality. Current guidance for some foreign visitors requires passports to remain valid for at least three months from arrival.
Poland border
The Belarus-Poland border reopened in September 2025 at designated crossings. However, political conditions remain unstable and crossings can be restricted or closed at short notice.
Lithuania border
Lithuania reopened the Medininkai-Kamenny Log and Salcininkai-Benyakoni crossings in November 2025. Restrictions continue to apply, including measures affecting Belarus-registered vehicles.
Latvia border
Only the Paternieki-Grigorovshchina crossing remains open between Latvia and Belarus, and additional restrictions apply.
Ukraine border
The Belarus-Ukraine border is heavily restricted and should not be considered a normal international travel route.
Russia border
Special rules apply to foreigners travelling between Belarus and Russia. Travellers should check that their visa or visa-free status permits their intended route before attempting to cross.
Latest Travel Changes
European border crossings reopened
Some previously closed crossings with Poland and Lithuania have reopened. However, the number of available crossings remains limited and border restrictions can change at short notice.
Visa-free scheme extended
Belarus has extended temporary visa-free arrangements for eligible travellers from a number of European countries through 31 December 2026.
Aviation restrictions continue
Major restrictions affecting Belarusian aviation remain in place. Belarusian airlines remain unable to operate normally within UK and EU airspace, significantly limiting direct travel options.
Before You Travel
Check your airline, airport information, Belarusian immigration requirements, the status of your intended border crossing and the travel advice issued by your own government immediately before departure.
Travellers should also consider whether their travel insurance remains valid, as travelling against an official government advisory can affect insurance coverage.
