Cameroon Status
WATCH
Travel to Cameroon continues, including international flights to Yaoundé and Douala, but serious security risks affect several parts of the country. Travellers should pay particular attention to warnings covering the North-West, South-West and Far-North regions and areas close to the borders with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
High-risk regions
Serious travel warnings apply to Cameroon’s North-West, South-West and Far-North regions. Terrorism, kidnapping, armed violence and improvised explosive devices are among the risks reported in these areas.
Border regions
Travellers should exercise particular caution near Cameroon’s international borders. Current official guidance warns against travel to areas close to the borders with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic because of terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery and other security threats.
Yaoundé and Douala
Cameroon’s two main international gateways remain accessible. However, violent crime and petty theft occur in both cities, and travellers should take precautions particularly when travelling at night.
Visa requirements
A visa is required for many foreign visitors. Cameroon operates an electronic visa system for travellers arriving by air. Travellers should apply before departure and allow sufficient time for processing.
Arriving by land or sea
Travellers entering Cameroon by road or sea should check the visa procedure carefully. Electronic visas cannot simply be obtained at a land or sea border, and travellers may need a physical visa issued before arrival.
Passport requirements
Travellers should generally have a passport valid for at least six months after their date of arrival in Cameroon.
Yellow fever
Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Cameroon. Travellers should carry their vaccination certificate when arriving.
Road travel
Road travel can be dangerous in high-risk regions. Armed robbery, kidnapping and attacks have occurred on roads, particularly close to international borders and in conflict-affected parts of the country.
Latest Travel Changes
Regional security warnings remain
The latest U.S. travel advisory keeps Cameroon at Level 2 overall while maintaining Level 4 warnings for the North-West, South-West and Far-North regions and areas close to the borders with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic.
Adamawa warning reduced in some areas
Current UK guidance no longer advises against non-essential travel to most of the Adamawa Region. Stronger warnings remain near the North Region and the borders with Nigeria and the Central African Republic.
Normal international air travel continues
No major nationwide aviation disruption currently prevents ordinary international travel to Cameroon.
Before You Travel
Check your airline, Cameroon’s visa requirements, your intended route, border conditions and the travel advice issued by your own government before departure.
If travelling outside Yaoundé or Douala, check the security situation for your specific destination rather than relying only on Cameroon’s nationwide status. Conditions vary significantly between regions.
