Canada Status
WATCH
Travel to Canada is operating normally for most travellers. However, Canada has extended temporary Ebola-related immigration and border-health measures affecting certain travellers connected to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. The extended measures are currently scheduled to remain in effect through 27 November 2026.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Visa or eTA
Most foreign visitors need either a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization, known as an eTA. The requirement depends on nationality and how the traveller enters Canada.
Flying to Canada
Visa-exempt foreign nationals who require an eTA must have a valid eTA linked electronically to the passport used for travel. Travellers from visa-required countries generally need a visitor visa unless they qualify for a specific eTA arrangement.
Entering by land or sea
Entry-document requirements can differ when arriving by car, bus, train or boat. Travellers should check Canada’s official immigration requirements for their nationality and method of travel.
Passport requirements
Passport requirements depend on nationality. Travellers should ensure their passport remains valid for the period required for their trip and any countries they transit through.
Temporary Ebola measures extended
Canada’s temporary Ebola-related immigration and border-health measures did not expire on 28 September as previously scheduled. The government has extended the measures for another 60 days, through 27 November 2026.
Affected countries
The temporary measures apply to specified travellers connected to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. Travellers who have recently been in or transited through an affected country should check Canada’s current public-health requirements before travelling.
Health assessment and quarantine
Travellers covered by the temporary Ebola border-health measures may be subject to health assessment and public-health requirements, which can include quarantine.
Immigration-document suspension
Certain immigration documents for specified foreign nationals connected to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan remain suspended under the extended measures. Travellers potentially affected should check Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s current rules before departure.
Travelling with children
Children travelling alone or with only one parent or guardian should carry appropriate consent documentation. Canadian border officials may ask questions or request supporting documents to establish that the child’s travel is authorized.
