What Travellers Should Know
Level 4 travel warning
The United States currently advises against travel to Chad for any reason because of crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, landmines and inadequate health infrastructure.
Sudan border closed
The Chad-Sudan border is closed to ordinary travellers, with limited humanitarian exceptions. Chad closed the border in February 2026 following repeated cross-border incidents connected to the conflict in Sudan.
Lake Chad region
The Lake Chad region carries a particularly serious terrorism and kidnapping risk. Current UK guidance advises against all travel to the area.
Northern Chad
Serious warnings apply to Borkou, Ennedi Ouest, Ennedi Est and Tibesti provinces. Rebel activity, contested gold-mining areas and landmines near the Libya border contribute to the risks.
Other border regions
Current UK guidance advises against all travel within 30 kilometres of Chad’s other international borders. Cross-border violence, armed groups, terrorism and kidnapping are significant concerns.
Visa requirements
A visa is required for many foreign visitors and should generally be obtained before departure. Visas are not routinely available on arrival.
Passport requirements
Travellers should have a passport valid for at least six months after their arrival date. Additional blank pages may be required for immigration stamps.
Police registration
Foreign visitors staying in Chad for more than 72 hours may be required to register with the police after arrival.
Yellow fever
Yellow fever vaccination requirements apply. Travellers should check the requirement for their itinerary and carry the appropriate vaccination certificate.

Before You Travel
Check your airline, Chad’s visa requirements, current border conditions, vaccination requirements and the travel advice issued by your own government before departure.
Travellers should not assume that conditions in N’Djamena reflect conditions elsewhere in Chad. Security risks increase substantially in many border, northern and remote regions, and foreign governments have extremely limited ability to provide emergency assistance outside the capital.
