What Travellers Should Know

Visa on arrival

Foreign visitors generally require a visa to enter Comoros. Visas can be purchased on arrival at Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport and other official points of entry.

Passport requirements

Travellers should have a passport valid for at least six months after their date of arrival. Requirements can differ by nationality, so travellers should confirm the rules applying to their passport before departure.

Cash for visa

Travellers obtaining a visa on arrival should carry sufficient cash in an accepted currency. Visa payment facilities can be limited, so visitors should not rely on being able to pay by card.

Limited medical facilities

Medical facilities in Comoros are limited, particularly outside Moroni. Serious illness or injury may require medical evacuation to another country.

Demonstrations

Political demonstrations can occur with little notice, including in Moroni and on Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli. Previous protests have blocked roads and disrupted travel between Moroni and the international airport.

Crime

Petty crime such as pickpocketing and theft occurs. Travellers should take normal precautions with valuables and avoid walking alone in isolated areas after dark.

Sea travel

Travellers moving between islands should exercise caution when using local boats. Sea conditions can change quickly, safety standards vary and small vessels may not have adequate safety equipment.

Volcanic and weather risks

Comoros is exposed to tropical storms, heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides and volcanic activity. These can occasionally affect roads, flights and inter-island transport.

Latest Travel Changes

Level 2 advisory remains

The current U.S. travel advisory places Comoros at Level 2 because of crime, unrest and health concerns.

Limited emergency services remain a concern

Current Canadian travel guidance recommends a high degree of caution because emergency services and medical facilities are limited.

Normal international travel continues

No major nationwide aviation, immigration or border disruption currently prevents ordinary travel to Comoros.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, visa requirements, passport validity, health requirements and the travel advice issued by your own government before departure.

Travellers planning to move between Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli should check domestic flight or boat arrangements separately because transport options can be limited and weather conditions can affect services.

Because medical facilities are limited, travellers should consider insurance that includes emergency treatment and medical evacuation.

Travel Status is designed to highlight significant changes that could affect a trip. It is not a replacement for official immigration, airline or government advice.
