Finland Status
WATCH
Travel to Finland is operating normally overall, with international flights, airports and ordinary Schengen travel functioning. However, all land-border crossing points between Finland and Russia remain closed until further notice.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Russia border closed
All land-border crossing points between Finland and Russia remain closed until further notice. Travellers should not plan an itinerary that depends on crossing directly between the two countries by road.
Maritime restrictions
Border crossing points for leisure boating at Haapasaari, the port of Nuijamaa and Santio are also closed until further notice.
Border zone
Access to areas immediately next to Finland’s eastern border is controlled. Travellers need a border-zone permit from the Finnish Border Guard to enter restricted border-zone areas.
Sweden and Norway
Finland’s borders with Sweden and Norway remain open. Normal travel continues between Finland and its Nordic neighbours.
Schengen Area
Finland is part of the Schengen Area. Normal Schengen immigration and visa rules apply to travellers entering Finland from outside the Schengen Area.
Entry/Exit System
The EU Entry/Exit System applies to eligible non-EU short-stay travellers crossing Finland’s external Schengen borders. Travellers may be required to provide biometric information when entering or leaving the Schengen Area.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Visa-exempt visitors are generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area.
Russian-registered vehicles
Restrictions apply to vehicles with Russian licence plates entering Finland. Travellers affected by these rules should check current Finnish Customs and government guidance before travelling.
Winter travel
Snow, ice and extreme cold can affect roads, rail services and flights during the Finnish winter. Travellers visiting later in the year should allow additional time and check transport conditions before longer journeys.
Latest Travel Changes
Russian land border remains closed
Finland continues to keep all land-border crossing points with Russia closed until further notice. There is currently no announced date for ordinary passenger crossings to resume.
Leisure-boating crossings also closed
The eastern-border maritime crossing points at Haapasaari, Nuijamaa and Santio remain closed to leisure boating.
Normal international aviation continues
Finland’s international aviation network continues operating. Helsinki Airport currently has scheduled services across Europe and to long-haul destinations.
Normal tourism continues
The Russian border closure does not represent a nationwide closure of Finland. Helsinki, Lapland and Finland’s other major destinations remain accessible through normal air, sea and overland routes from other countries.
Before You Travel
Check your airline, passport and visa requirements before departure.
Do not plan a journey that depends on crossing the Finland-Russia land border. All land-border crossing points remain closed until further notice.
If travelling near the Russian border, remain outside restricted border zones unless you have the appropriate permit from the Finnish Border Guard.
Travellers entering Finland from outside the Schengen Area should allow time for immigration and Entry/Exit System procedures where applicable.
During winter, check road, rail and flight conditions before travelling, particularly if your journey involves northern Finland or Lapland.
