What Travellers Should Know

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers who require a visa can apply through Guinea’s eVisa system for eligible private and business travel. Applications should be completed several days before departure.

Passport requirements

Travellers should check the requirements applying to their nationality. Current UK guidance requires British visitors to have a passport valid for at least six months after arrival.

Yellow fever

A yellow fever vaccination certificate can be required for entry depending on the traveller’s origin. Proof of vaccination is also among the documents required when applying for Guinea’s eVisa.

Crime

Pickpocketing, purse snatching, theft from vehicles, assault and residential burglary occur, particularly in Conakry. Travellers should keep valuables out of sight and take additional care after dark.

Demonstrations

Political demonstrations and protests can occur and may disrupt roads and other transport. Travellers should avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings.

Road travel after dark

Driving between cities at night carries additional security and road-safety risks. U.S. government personnel are currently prohibited from travelling between Guinean cities at night.

Overland borders

Guinea shares land borders with Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Travellers planning an overland journey should confirm the status and opening arrangements of their intended crossing shortly before travelling.

Healthcare

Medical facilities are limited, particularly outside Conakry. Travellers should have appropriate travel insurance that includes medical treatment and emergency evacuation where possible.

Cash

Cash remains important for many transactions. Travellers should also be aware of restrictions on the amount of Guinean and foreign currency that can be taken out of the country.

Normal entry procedures continue
