Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Crime
Violent crime is a significant concern in Guyana. Armed robbery and other serious crimes occur, particularly at night. Travellers should remain aware of their surroundings and take additional care with valuables and transportation.
Georgetown
Additional care is recommended in parts of Georgetown. Current U.S. guidance places restrictions on its government employees visiting Stabroek Market and Bourda Market at certain times and advises avoiding National Park and the Seawall after dark.
Venezuela border
Security conditions along the border with Venezuela remain tense. Organised criminal activity has also been reported in border areas.
No official Venezuela land crossing
There is no official land border crossing between Guyana and Venezuela. The border region is largely remote jungle and travellers should not attempt an informal overland crossing.
Suriname ferry
The official Guyana-Suriname ferry across the Corentyne River is operating again after a temporary suspension in August 2026. Travellers should use the scheduled ferry and check the latest timetable before travelling.
Avoid unofficial water taxis
Travellers crossing between Guyana and Suriname should use authorized services. Current UK guidance warns that using unofficial water taxis to enter Guyana from Suriname is illegal and can result in arrest, imprisonment and deportation.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers should check the rules applying to their passport before departure.
Passport requirements
Passport requirements depend on nationality. Current U.S. and UK guidance states that passports should have at least six months’ validity beyond arrival.
Yellow fever
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from certain countries where yellow fever transmission is a risk.
Flooding
Guyana is vulnerable to flooding, particularly in low-lying coastal areas. Heavy rainfall can cause localized road and transport problems.
