What Travellers Should Know

Current volcanic disruption

Volcanic ash from Mount Lewotolok is currently affecting aviation in East Nusa Tenggara. Wunopito Airport in Lewoleba has been temporarily closed because of ash in the surrounding airspace.

Bali and Jakarta

The current Lewotolok disruption is localized. Indonesia’s main international gateways, including Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, are not part of the current Wunopito closure.

Volcanoes

Indonesia has many active volcanoes. Eruptions and volcanic ash can cause sudden airport closures, flight cancellations and changes to local travel. Follow official exclusion zones around active volcanoes.

All Indonesia declaration

Travellers arriving in Indonesia must complete the All Indonesia online arrival declaration within 72 hours before arrival. The system combines immigration, customs, health and quarantine information in one declaration.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality and purpose of travel. Eligible visitors can obtain a 30-day Visa on Arrival or apply online before travelling. Other nationalities and travel purposes may require a different visa.

Commercial content

A tourist Visa on Arrival is not suitable for all work or commercial activities. Travellers planning sponsored social media, influencer or other commercial content should check whether they need a different visa.

Bali tourist levy

Foreign tourists visiting Bali are subject to a provincial tourist levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah. This is separate from Indonesia’s visa requirements.

Papua

Strong security warnings apply to parts of Papua. Current U.S. guidance advises against travel to Central Papua and Highland Papua because of civil unrest.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations occur regularly in Indonesia and can disrupt roads and local transportation. Foreign visitors should avoid demonstrations and political gatherings.

Yellow fever

Travellers arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission may need to show proof of yellow fever vaccination.

Latest Travel Changes

Wunopito Airport closed

Wunopito Airport in Lewoleba, East Nusa Tenggara, is currently affected by volcanic ash from Mount Lewotolok. AirNav Indonesia extended the airport closure into 25 September.

Volcanic aviation risk continues

Mount Lewotolok remains under aviation monitoring, and further changes to flights or airport operations are possible if ash conditions change.

Earlier major airport disruption has ended

Volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau caused temporary closures at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport and several other airports earlier in September. Those closures were temporary and should not be presented as continuing nationwide disruption today.

Updated UK volcano guidance

UK travel advice was updated on 18 September with revised guidance for volcanic activity in Indonesia. Travellers are advised to follow local exclusion zones and official instructions during eruptions.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, passport and visa requirements before departure.

Complete the free All Indonesia arrival declaration within 72 hours before arriving.

If travelling to Lewoleba or elsewhere in East Nusa Tenggara, check your flight immediately before departure because volcanic ash is currently affecting aviation.

If visiting Bali, remember that the Bali tourist levy is separate from your Indonesian visa or Visa on Arrival.

Check official volcano information before travelling near an active volcano and never enter an official exclusion zone.

If travelling to Papua, check the specific security advice for your destination because risk levels vary considerably across the region.
