What Travellers Should Know

Queen Alia International Airport

Jordan’s main international airport is operating. International services continue to destinations across Europe, the Middle East and other regions.

Regional airspace

The wider Middle East security situation remains unpredictable. Jordanian airspace or individual flight routes can be restricted at short notice if regional hostilities escalate.

Israel and West Bank crossings

The King Hussein/Allenby Bridge, Northern/Sheikh Hussein crossing and Southern/Wadi Araba crossing normally handle passenger travel between Jordan and Israel or the West Bank. Opening hours vary and crossings can close without notice.

King Hussein/Allenby Bridge

Travellers entering Jordan through the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge should check visa requirements carefully. A Jordanian visa cannot normally be obtained on arrival at this crossing, so travellers who require one should arrange it beforehand.

Syria border

The security situation near the Syrian border remains sensitive. Strong official travel warnings apply to parts of northern and northeastern Jordan close to Syria.

Iraq border

Strong security warnings also apply to areas close to the Iraqi border. Travellers planning an overland journey towards Iraq should check current conditions immediately before departure.

Saudi Arabia crossings

Jordan’s main crossings with Saudi Arabia are operating. The Umari, Mudawara and Al-Durra crossings normally operate 24 hours a day.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Some travellers can obtain a single-entry visa at a Jordanian airport or eligible land crossing, while others need prior approval or an electronic visa.

Jordan Pass

Eligible tourists staying at least three nights can purchase a Jordan Pass before arrival. It includes admission to major attractions and can cover the visa fee when the relevant conditions are met.

Petra and Wadi Rum

Jordan’s major tourist destinations, including Petra and Wadi Rum, remain accessible. Travellers should nevertheless monitor local weather because flash flooding can occasionally affect desert areas, roads and archaeological sites.

Security alerts

Regional missile and drone activity can create risks from falling debris even when Jordan itself is not the intended target. Follow local authority instructions and seek shelter if warnings or sirens are issued.

Latest Travel Changes

International flights operating

Queen Alia International Airport is operating normally overall on 25 September, with numerous international arrivals and departures taking place.

Regional security risk continues

Current official guidance warns that hostilities involving neighboring countries could cause Jordan’s security, airport or airspace conditions to change suddenly.

Border crossings remain sensitive

Crossings between Jordan and Israel or the West Bank are operating according to individual schedules but can close at short notice because of security developments.

U.S. advisory remains Level 3

The current U.S. State Department advisory is Level 3: Reconsider Travel because of terrorism and armed conflict. It carries stronger Do Not Travel warnings for several specific locations and border areas.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, passport and Jordanian visa requirements before departure.

If travelling through Queen Alia International Airport, check your flight directly with the airline because regional airspace conditions can change quickly.

If crossing between Jordan and Israel or the West Bank, check the operating status and opening hours of the specific crossing immediately before travelling.

Do not assume that a visa can be obtained at every Jordanian land crossing. In particular, check the requirements for the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge before travelling.

Avoid areas covered by official warnings near the Syrian and Iraqi borders.

Follow local authority instructions if missile or drone alerts are issued and stay away from any fallen debris.
