Kyrgyzstan Status
WATCH
Travel to Kyrgyzstan is operating normally overall, including international flights and major airports. However, the Torugart and Irkeshtam road crossings with China are temporarily closing from the night of 25 September into 26 September, with additional closures scheduled for early October.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
China border closure
The Torugart and Irkeshtam road crossings between Kyrgyzstan and China are temporarily closing from 10pm on 25 September until 8am on 26 September because of the Mid-Autumn Festival in China.
More China border closures coming
The same two road crossings are scheduled to close again from 10pm on 1 October until 8am on 4 October because of China’s National Day holidays.
Flights
Commercial aviation is operating normally overall. Bishkek and Osh continue to receive domestic and international flights.
Bishkek Airport
Manas International Airport is the principal international gateway for Bishkek and continues to operate scheduled passenger services.
Osh Airport
Osh International Airport also handles domestic and international services and remains operational.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Citizens of many countries can enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free for short stays, while an electronic visa system is available for eligible travellers.
Registration requirements
Registration requirements depend on nationality and length of stay. Travellers staying for longer periods should check whether they must register with the authorities.
Tajikistan border
The Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border reopened following the 2025 border agreement. There have been no further clashes since the agreement, but official guidance continues to recommend caution because the security situation can change quickly.
Landmines and unexploded ordnance
There may still be unexploded ordnance and mines in some areas close to the Tajikistan border, particularly in the Batken region. Travellers should remain on established routes.
Border crossings
Kyrgyzstan’s overland borders can be complicated for foreign travellers. Individual checkpoints can close without warning, so travellers should check the status of their intended crossing before departure.
Mountain travel
Much of Kyrgyzstan is mountainous. Weather, snow and landslides can affect roads and mountain passes, particularly outside the main cities.
Remote areas
Mobile coverage, fuel, accommodation and emergency services can be limited in remote mountain regions. Travellers heading into isolated areas should prepare accordingly.
