Libya Status
DISRUPTION
Commercial flights continue to operate from Libya, including international services from Tripoli. However, severe security warnings, the risk of localized armed violence, unpredictable road conditions and border restrictions can significantly affect travel.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Mitiga Airport is operating
Mitiga International Airport is Tripoli’s functioning civilian airport and is currently handling scheduled domestic and international passenger flights.
International flights are operating
Current services from Tripoli include international connections such as Istanbul, Cairo, Tunis and Jeddah. Commercial aviation therefore continues despite Libya’s wider security problems.
Flights can change quickly
Air travel remains vulnerable to the security situation. Flights can be cancelled or changed at short notice, particularly if fighting affects access to an airport or surrounding areas.
Tripoli International Airport
The old Tripoli International Airport remains closed to normal passenger operations. Travellers flying to Tripoli generally use Mitiga International Airport.
Tripoli
Security in Tripoli remains unpredictable. Armed clashes have occurred between competing groups and can result in roadblocks, airport disruption and sudden restrictions on movement.
Benghazi
Commercial travel continues through Benghazi, but strong official travel warnings remain in place. Travellers should not interpret operating flights as evidence that the wider security situation has normalized.
Land borders
All of Libya’s land borders can be subject to closure at short notice. Travellers considering an overland journey should confirm that their intended crossing is operating immediately before departure.
Border regions
Security risks are particularly serious in remote border areas. Terrorist and criminal groups operate across parts of the wider Sahara and Sahel region.
Road travel
Road travel can be dangerous because of armed groups, robbery, carjacking, checkpoints, unexploded ordnance and the possibility of being caught in localized fighting.
Visa requirements
Foreign visitors generally require appropriate authorization to enter Libya. Requirements can be complex, particularly for independent tourism, business travel and journalists.
Kidnapping risk
Foreign nationals can be attractive targets for kidnapping by criminal or extremist groups. The risk is particularly serious in remote regions.
Limited consular assistance
Some foreign governments have limited diplomatic operations in Libya, which can make emergency consular assistance considerably more difficult than in many other destinations.
Latest Travel Changes
Mitiga Airport operating
Mitiga Airport’s current flight information shows scheduled domestic and international arrivals and departures continuing.
International connectivity improving
International airlines have been gradually restoring connections with Libya. ITA Airways resumed scheduled Rome-Tripoli services in September, adding another European connection.
Security situation remains fragile
Despite improving aviation connectivity, the underlying security situation remains unpredictable and localized armed violence can break out with little warning.
UK warning remains severe
Current UK guidance advises against all travel to substantial parts of Libya and against all but essential travel even to several major cities and areas, including Tripoli and Benghazi.
Land travel remains unpredictable
Land-border crossings and roads can be closed with little warning if the security situation deteriorates.
Before You Travel
Check the latest official travel advisory for your nationality before considering travel to Libya.
Confirm your flight directly with the operating airline shortly before departure because schedules can change rapidly.
If travelling through Tripoli, remember that passenger flights generally use Mitiga International Airport rather than the old Tripoli International Airport.
If travelling overland, confirm that your intended border crossing is open immediately before departure.
Avoid remote border regions and areas covered by official warnings because of terrorism, kidnapping, armed groups and unexploded ordnance.
Have contingency plans for sudden roadblocks, airport closures, flight cancellations or deterioration in the security situation.
