What Travellers Should Know

No commercial airport

Liechtenstein does not have a commercial passenger airport. International visitors normally arrive through neighbouring Switzerland or Austria and continue by road or rail and bus.

Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport in Switzerland is one of the most convenient major international airports for reaching Liechtenstein. Travellers can continue by train towards eastern Switzerland and then connect by bus.

Schengen Area

Liechtenstein is part of the Schengen Area. The same short-stay Schengen rules generally apply as in neighbouring Switzerland and Austria.

Switzerland border

Liechtenstein and Switzerland have extremely close border and customs arrangements. The border is open for ordinary travel, although customs checks remain possible.

Austria border

The border with Austria is also an internal Schengen border. Ordinary cross-border travel is functioning normally.

Entry/Exit System

The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational at external Schengen border crossings. It affects many non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays. If you reach Liechtenstein after entering Schengen through another country, the relevant processing normally occurs at your external Schengen entry point.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers requiring a Schengen visa should obtain the appropriate authorization before entering the Schengen Area.

90-day rule

For eligible visa-free visitors, time spent in Liechtenstein counts towards the Schengen limit of 90 days within any 180-day period.

Mountain conditions

Liechtenstein is mountainous. Avalanches, landslides and sudden weather changes can create hazards, particularly for hikers and travellers heading into higher elevations.

Getting around

Liechtenstein has an extensive bus network connecting communities including Vaduz, Schaan and Balzers and providing connections with neighbouring Swiss and Austrian transport networks.

Latest Travel Changes

Travel operating normally

No significant current nationwide entry, border or transport disruption has been identified.

Schengen Entry/Exit System operational

The Entry/Exit System is now fully operational at external Schengen border crossing points and records many non-EU short-stay travellers entering and leaving the Schengen Area.

No Liechtenstein-specific border controls

Current temporary internal Schengen border controls elsewhere in Europe do not include Liechtenstein’s borders with Switzerland or Austria.

U.S. advisory remains Level 1

The current U.S. State Department advisory is Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions.

Before You Travel

Check your passport and Schengen visa requirements before departure.

Remember that Liechtenstein has no commercial airport, so plan your journey through a neighbouring country.

If entering the Schengen Area from outside Europe, allow sufficient time for Entry/Exit System processing at your external Schengen entry point.

If driving, check the road and vehicle requirements for Switzerland or Austria as well as Liechtenstein.

If hiking or travelling into the mountains, check current weather, avalanche and trail conditions before departure.

Travel Status is designed to highlight significant changes that could affect a trip. It is not a replacement for official immigration, airline or government advice.
