What Travellers Should Know

Commercial aviation continues

Pakistan remains accessible by air. International and domestic commercial flights continue through the country’s major airports.

India border crossing closed

The Wagah-Attari crossing, normally the principal road crossing between Pakistan and India, is currently closed to ordinary cross-border travel.

Wagah ceremony continues

Visitors can still access the Wagah border area to attend the daily border ceremony even though international passenger crossing is currently suspended.

Kartarpur Corridor

The Kartarpur Corridor is currently closed for crossings by Sikh pilgrims. Travellers should check for any change before planning a journey involving the corridor.

Afghanistan border

Pakistan’s crossings with Afghanistan can close at short notice. Open crossings can experience overcrowding, violence and significant delays.

Iran border

Official crossings with Iran are located in Balochistan, where severe security warnings apply. Crossings can close at short notice and access is closely monitored.

China border

Khunjerab Pass on the Karakoram Highway is the official Pakistan-China land crossing and is currently open to foreign tourists, but travellers should check conditions before attempting the journey.

Balochistan

Severe security warnings apply throughout Balochistan because of terrorism, kidnapping and militant activity.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Severe warnings also apply to large parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar and numerous districts close to Afghanistan.

Pakistan-administered Kashmir

Security warnings apply to Pakistan-administered Kashmir, particularly areas close to the Line of Control with India.

Protests

Political demonstrations and protests can cause roadblocks, transport disruption and heightened security with little warning. Travellers should avoid demonstrations and large political gatherings.

Terrorism

Terrorist attacks remain a serious risk in parts of Pakistan. Potential targets can include transport infrastructure, security facilities, religious sites and crowded public places.

Kidnapping

Kidnapping remains a significant risk in some regions, particularly Balochistan and areas close to the Afghanistan border.

Before You Travel

Check your airline and individual flight before departure.

Confirm the visa and passport requirements applying to your nationality.

Do not plan an overland journey between Pakistan and India through Wagah without checking for reopening, as the crossing is currently closed.

Check the exact status of Afghanistan and Iran border crossings immediately before attempting an overland journey because closures can occur at short notice.

Check official regional security advice before travelling outside major cities, particularly if your journey involves Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir or an international border region.

Avoid demonstrations, political gatherings and unexpected crowds and be prepared for temporary road or transport disruption.
