Timor-Leste Status
WATCH
Travel to Timor-Leste continues, with commercial flights and Dili’s international airport operating. However, foreign travellers face restrictions at the land border with Indonesia, where only the Batugade-Mota’ain crossing is currently available to foreign nationals and advance visa arrangements may be required for overland entry.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Indonesia land border
Foreign travellers crossing between Timor-Leste and Indonesia should use the Batugade-Mota’ain border crossing. Other land crossings are currently restricted to citizens of Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
Overland entry requires planning
Visa arrangements differ when entering Timor-Leste overland. Travellers who require a visa should obtain the necessary authorization before arriving at the land border rather than assuming a visa can be issued at the crossing.
Arrival by air
International flights operate through Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili. Visa arrangements for eligible travellers arriving at Dili airport differ from those applying at the Indonesian land border.
Limited international flight network
Timor-Leste naturally has a relatively small international aviation network. This does not by itself represent a disruption, but travellers should check their flight before departure because fewer alternative services may be available if a flight is cancelled.
Demonstrations and local unrest
Demonstrations can occur in Dili and elsewhere and may occasionally become violent or disrupt roads. Travellers should avoid large gatherings and follow instructions from local authorities.
Latest Travel Changes
Land-border restrictions remain important
Foreign nationals currently have more limited options than Timor-Leste and Indonesian citizens when crossing the land border. The Batugade-Mota’ain crossing is the principal land crossing available to foreign travellers.
No major nationwide aviation disruption identified
International flights continue through Dili and the main international airport remains operational. Timor-Leste’s WATCH classification is therefore primarily due to current land-border and overland-entry restrictions rather than an aviation disruption.
