What Travellers Should Know

Northern Togo security situation

The most serious current security concerns are concentrated in northern Togo. Armed extremist groups operating across the Burkina Faso border have carried out attacks and kidnappings, and Togolese security forces have increased military operations in the region.

Burkina Faso border

Official travel warnings cover areas close to the Burkina Faso border. The UK currently advises against all travel within 30 km of the border, with limited exceptions including Dapaong and the N1 approach from the south.

Savanes Region

The wider Savanes Region is also subject to heightened warnings because of terrorism and kidnapping risks. Foreign travellers entering the affected region may require written travel authorization from Togo’s Ministry of Armed Forces.

eVisa applications

Togo operates an online eVisa system. The official Togo Voyage platform currently instructs travellers who need a visa to submit their application at least five days before arriving in the country, until further notice.

Lomé and southern Togo

The severe northern security warnings do not apply equally to Lomé and most of southern Togo. Ordinary travel continues, although travellers should remain alert to crime and avoid demonstrations or political gatherings.

Latest Travel Changes

Northern security warnings remain in force

Security restrictions remain significant in northern Togo. Areas close to Burkina Faso are subject to the strongest warnings, while the wider Savanes Region remains affected by the threat of terrorism and kidnapping.

Visa applications require advance submission

Togo’s official eVisa platform currently states that visa applications must be submitted at least five days before arrival until further notice. Travellers who require a visa should therefore complete the process well before departure.

No nationwide aviation disruption identified

Commercial international flights continue through Lomé. Togo’s WATCH status is primarily due to the northern security situation and current entry procedures rather than a nationwide transport disruption.
