Is Lesotho a Country?

Yes. Lesotho is an independent African country that is located in southern part of Africa. The country can honestly sometimes look like it is part of South Africa because it is totally surrounded by South African territory. However, Lesotho is not part of South Africa. It is 100% a sovereign state that has its own government, borders and capital city. The capital city is Maseru.

Lesotho was formerly the British territory of Basutoland. It became independent from Britain in 1966 and officially became the Kingdom of Lesotho. So even though you have to pass through South Africa if you’re travelling to Lesotho by land, you are entering a completely different country.

Quick Answer

Yes. Lesotho is an independent country in southern Africa. It is completely surrounded by South Africa, but it is not part of South Africa.
