Do Africans Drive Modern Cars?
Whenever I think of transportation in Africa, I picture old buses or people walking everywhere. But now I’m starting to wonder, do people in African cities actually drive modern cars like we do? When ever I think of transportation in Africa, I picture old buses or people walking everywhere. But now I’m starting to wonder, do people in African cities actually drive modern cars like we do?
Absolutely. Many people are surprised to learn that in cities across Africa, you’ll find the same types of cars you’d see anywhere else in the world. From Toyotas and Hyundais to BMWs and Range Rovers, modern vehicles are a part of everyday life in places like Accra, Nairobi, Lagos, and Johannesburg.
In fact, car ownership is on the rise across many parts of Africa as urban areas expand and the middle class grows. There are also luxury car dealerships, ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt, and a thriving auto repair industry in several major cities.
Of course, public transport and walking are still a big part of daily life, especially in more rural or lower-income areas. But the idea that Africans don’t drive modern cars is simply outdated. Like anywhere else, Africa is full of diversity and that includes the types of vehicles people use to move around.
Africa isn’t stuck in the past. It’s evolving, and modern cars are just one of the many signs of that progress.
