What Travellers Should Know

Austria is in the Schengen Area

Austria is part of the Schengen Area. Short-stay visa rules and the 90-days-in-any-180-day-period limit apply to eligible non-EU visitors across the Schengen Area as a whole.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Many travellers can visit Austria visa-free for short stays, while others must obtain a Schengen visa before travelling.

Passport requirements

For travellers subject to standard Schengen passport rules, passports generally need to have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and remain valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen Area.

Entry/Exit System

The EU Entry/Exit System is operating at external Schengen borders. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may have their photograph and fingerprints registered when entering the Schengen Area.

Border controls

Although Austria is within the Schengen Area, travellers should still carry valid identification. Temporary border controls can be introduced within the Schengen Area and may affect some journeys.

Latest Travel Changes

EU Entry/Exit System

The Entry/Exit System became fully operational at external Schengen border crossing points in April 2026. It electronically records eligible non-EU short-stay travellers and uses biometric information instead of relying on manual passport stamps.

Allow additional border time

Travellers using the Entry/Exit System for the first time may need additional time for biometric registration. This is particularly relevant when Austria is the traveller’s first point of entry into the Schengen Area.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, airport information, Austrian and Schengen entry requirements and the travel advice issued by your own government before departure.

If travelling across European land borders, check whether temporary border controls could affect your route.
