What Travellers Should Know

High-risk regions

Security conditions vary significantly across Colombia. Current U.S. guidance advises against travel to Arauca, most of Cauca, most of Valle del Cauca and Norte de Santander because of crime and terrorism.

Venezuela border

Travellers should exercise particular caution around the Colombia-Venezuela border. Armed groups, kidnapping and violent crime remain serious risks, and some governments advise against travel to the border region.

Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena

Colombia’s major tourism and business destinations remain accessible. However, travellers should remain alert to robbery, theft and other crime even in heavily visited areas.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality and purpose of travel. Some nationalities can enter Colombia without a visa for short tourist visits, while others must obtain a visa before departure.

Check-Mig

Travellers entering or leaving Colombia by air should complete the Check-Mig immigration registration before reaching immigration control. Colombia’s immigration authority allows the form to be completed from 72 hours until one hour before travel.

Land-border travellers

Colombia’s immigration authority states that travellers using a land immigration checkpoint do not need to present Check-Mig. Travellers should still check the requirements applying to their particular border crossing.

Crime

Violent crime, including armed robbery, assault and murder, occurs in Colombia. Travellers should avoid displaying valuables, use reputable transport and exercise additional caution when withdrawing money or travelling after dark.

Demonstrations

Protests and demonstrations can occur with little notice and may disrupt roads and public transport. Travellers should avoid demonstrations and check local conditions before long road journeys.

Level 3 advisory remains

The current U.S. travel advisory places Colombia at Level 3 because of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and natural-disaster risks.

Regional Do Not Travel warnings

Stronger warnings continue to apply to Arauca, most of Cauca, most of Valle del Cauca, Norte de Santander and the Colombia-Venezuela border region.

Normal international travel continues

The security warnings have not resulted in a nationwide shutdown of tourism or international air travel. Major airports and normal immigration services continue operating.

Before You Travel

If travelling outside Colombia’s principal tourist destinations, check the security situation for your specific route and destination. Conditions can differ substantially between departments and border regions.
