Djibouti Status
WATCH
Travel to Djibouti continues, with international flights, the main international airport and normal immigration procedures operating. However, travellers should be aware of terrorism risks, restrictions near the Eritrea border and heightened security in some border areas.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Visa requirements
Travellers require a visa to enter Djibouti. Depending on nationality and circumstances, visas can be obtained before travel or on arrival at the airport.
Passport requirements
Travellers should have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of travel. Visitors should also carry evidence of their onward journey.
Yellow fever
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from countries where there is a risk of yellow fever transmission.
Eritrea border
The Djibouti-Eritrea border remains a particularly sensitive area. Current UK guidance advises against all travel to the border, while U.S. guidance advises travellers to reconsider travel within 10 miles of the Eritrean border.
Travel north of Obock
Government approval may be required for travel north of Obock towards the Eritrean border. Military roadblocks and checkpoints operate in parts of this region.
Somaliland border
Travellers approaching the Djibouti-Somaliland border should exercise additional caution. Military checkpoints and roadblocks operate in the area and travellers may need approval for some journeys.
Ethiopia border and road travel
The road corridor between Djibouti and Ethiopia is an important regional transport route. However, security conditions on the Ethiopian side can change and roadblocks or localized conflict can occasionally affect journeys.
Landmines
Unmarked landmines remain a risk near the Eritrea border. Other remote border areas can also be poorly marked, so travellers should remain on established roads and routes.
Regional security
Conflict and instability in neighbouring Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Yemen can affect the security environment in Djibouti. Travellers should monitor developments if their journey involves the wider region.
Latest Travel Changes
Regional tensions remain a concern
Current travel guidance continues to highlight instability and military activity in the wider Red Sea and Horn of Africa region. Developments in neighbouring countries can affect security and transport conditions with little notice.
Eritrea border warning remains
Strong travel warnings remain in place for the Djibouti-Eritrea border because of longstanding border tensions, military activity and the presence of landmines.
Security controls in border regions
Military roadblocks and checkpoints continue to operate in some northern and border areas. Travellers may require permission from authorities before travelling on certain routes.
Normal international travel continues
There is currently no major nationwide disruption preventing ordinary international air travel to Djibouti.
Before You Travel
Check your airline, visa requirements, passport validity and any vaccination requirements before departure.
If travelling overland, check the security situation for your exact route. Conditions near Djibouti’s borders can be significantly different from those in Djibouti City.
Avoid travel towards the Eritrea border unless you have checked current restrictions and official travel advice. Military controls and landmine risks remain in the area.
If continuing overland into Ethiopia or Somaliland, check conditions on both sides of the border immediately before travelling because neighbouring countries have their own security restrictions.
