Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Schengen Area
Greece is part of the Schengen Area. Normal Schengen immigration and visa rules apply to travellers arriving from outside the Schengen Area.
Entry/Exit System
The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers entering or leaving the Schengen Area through Greece may have their travel-document and biometric information recorded.
90-day rule
Visa-exempt non-EU visitors are generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area, rather than receiving a separate 90-day allowance for Greece.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers who require a Schengen visa should obtain it before travelling.
Ferries
Ferries are an important part of travel between the Greek islands. Strong winds and rough seas can cause individual ferry cancellations even when other transport is operating normally.
Strikes
Transport strikes occur periodically in Greece and can affect buses, trains, ferries and flights. Some strikes are announced at short notice, so travellers should check their transport provider before departure.
Demonstrations
Political demonstrations occur regularly, particularly in central Athens around Syntagma Square. Travellers should avoid demonstrations and follow instructions from local authorities.
Wildfires
The wildfire season generally runs from April to October. Fires can cause localized road closures, evacuations and transport disruption, particularly during periods of extreme heat, drought or strong winds.
Earthquakes
Greece is in an active earthquake zone. Travellers should follow instructions from Greek emergency authorities if significant seismic activity occurs during their visit.
Latest Travel Changes
Normal international travel continues
No major nationwide disruption affecting international flights, airports, immigration services or ordinary tourism has been identified.
Entry/Exit System operational
The EU Entry/Exit System is now fully operational at external Schengen border crossing points, changing border procedures for many non-EU short-stay visitors.
Wildfire season continues
Greece remains within its April-to-October wildfire season. Travellers should monitor local alerts when visiting areas affected by extreme heat, strong winds or wildfire activity.
Normal travel advisory
The current U.S. travel advisory places Greece at Level 1, advising visitors to exercise normal precautions.
Before You Travel
Check your airline, passport and visa requirements before departure.
Non-EU short-stay travellers entering the Schengen Area through Greece should be prepared for Entry/Exit System procedures where applicable.
If travelling between Greek islands, check your ferry shortly before departure because strong winds can cause cancellations or schedule changes.
Monitor official wildfire and emergency information, particularly during the summer and early autumn wildfire season.
If a strike or demonstration is announced, check whether your flight, ferry, train, bus or road journey could be affected.
