What Travellers Should Know

Security situation

Violent crime remains a significant concern in Honduras. Armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes occur, and gang activity is widespread in some areas.

Gracias a Dios

Current U.S. guidance advises against all travel to Gracias a Dios Department because of crime. The remote region has limited infrastructure, government services and police presence.

State of Exception

Honduras continues to operate a State of Exception introduced in response to extortion and other crime. The measure currently covers many municipalities and gives police additional powers.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations can develop with little warning and may become violent. Protests can block highways, interfere with airport access and disrupt other transportation.

CA-5 highway

Demonstrations sometimes affect the CA-5 highway between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. This road also provides access to Palmerola International Airport, so travellers should check conditions before travelling to the airport.

CA-4 travel

Honduras participates in the Central America-4 agreement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. For eligible travellers, the permitted immigration period is shared across the participating countries rather than automatically restarting at each border.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Do not assume that visa-free entry available to one nationality applies to another. Check the Honduran immigration requirements for your passport before travelling.

Passport stamp

Make sure immigration officials correctly stamp your passport when entering Honduras. Failure to obtain the appropriate entry stamp can result in problems or fines when leaving.

Customs declaration

Travellers must complete Honduras’s customs declaration before entering or leaving the country and present the resulting QR code to customs authorities.

Rainy season

Honduras is vulnerable to heavy rain, flooding and landslides, particularly during the June-to-December rainy season. Seasonal risk alone does not indicate a nationwide travel disruption, but road conditions can change quickly after heavy rain.

Latest Travel Changes

International travel operating

No major nationwide shutdown affecting international flights, airports, immigration services or land borders has been identified.

Updated security advisory

The U.S. travel advisory was updated on 25 August 2026 and remains Level 3: Reconsider Travel. Crime and terrorism are currently listed as risk indicators.

Gracias a Dios remains under stronger warning

The U.S. government continues to advise against all travel to Gracias a Dios Department because of serious security risks.

State of Exception continues

The State of Exception introduced in 2022 remains in effect and has been expanded to cover many municipalities as authorities respond to extortion and other crime.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, passport and visa requirements before departure.

Complete the required Honduran customs declaration and keep the QR code available for customs officials.

Make sure immigration officials correctly stamp your passport when entering the country.

If travelling overland, use official border crossings and remember that CA-4 immigration rules may affect how long you can remain across Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Avoid demonstrations and check road conditions before travelling, particularly if your journey uses major highways or requires road access to an airport.

Take additional precautions against violent crime and check current official advice before travelling to remote or higher-risk areas.

Travel Status is designed to highlight significant changes that could affect a trip. It is not a replacement for official immigration, airline or government advice.
