What Travellers Should Know

Austria border controls

Austria has temporarily reintroduced internal Schengen border controls at its land border with Hungary. The current measure runs from 16 September 2026 until 15 March 2027.

The border is not closed

Normal road and rail travel between Hungary and Austria continues. The temporary controls mean travellers may be stopped for document checks and should carry appropriate identification and travel documents.

Schengen Area

Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. Travellers arriving from another Schengen country normally do not pass through routine immigration controls, although temporary internal checks can be introduced.

External Schengen borders

Hungary’s borders with Serbia and Ukraine are external Schengen borders, where normal immigration and customs controls apply.

Entry/Exit System

The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational. Applicable non-EU short-stay travellers crossing Hungary’s external Schengen borders may have passport and biometric information recorded.

90-day rule

Visa-exempt non-EU visitors are generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Time spent in Hungary counts towards this total.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers who require a Schengen visa should obtain the appropriate visa before travelling.

Serbia border

Travellers entering Hungary from Serbia cross an external Schengen border and should allow time for immigration and customs procedures, particularly during busy travel periods.

Ukraine border

Hungary’s border with Ukraine remains an external Schengen border. Travellers should check current conditions before using crossings because circumstances on the Ukrainian side can change.

Entry/Exit System operational

The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational at external Schengen border crossings, changing border procedures for many non-EU short-stay travellers entering Hungary from outside the Schengen Area.

Flights operating normally

No significant nationwide aviation disruption affecting ordinary travel to Hungary has been identified.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, passport and visa requirements before departure.

If travelling between Hungary and Austria by road or rail, carry your passport or other appropriate travel document and allow some additional time for possible border checks.

If entering Hungary from Serbia or Ukraine, remember that you are crossing an external Schengen border and normal immigration controls apply.

Non-EU short-stay travellers should be prepared for Entry/Exit System procedures when crossing an external Schengen border where applicable.

Check road and border conditions shortly before an overland journey, particularly when travelling through busy international crossings.
