What Travellers Should Know

International flights

Iran still has some international flights, but the network is significantly disrupted. Travellers should not rely on older schedules and should confirm their flight directly with the airline immediately before travelling.

Tehran airport remains operational

Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran is not completely closed. Some international arrivals and departures continue, but available destinations and airlines are much more limited than under normal conditions.

Airline restrictions

New restrictions and sanctions affecting Iranian airlines have further reduced international connections. Several countries have suspended operations by Iranian carriers, making international travel more difficult.

Regional airspace

Airspace restrictions across the wider Middle East can affect flights to and from Iran even when Iranian airports themselves remain open. Routes may be cancelled, diverted or suspended at short notice.

Türkiye land border

Land routes between Iran and Türkiye remain an important alternative for travellers unable to find flights. Heavy congestion has recently been reported at crossings including Bazargan and Razi.

Armenia land route

Overland travel towards Armenia is also being used as an alternative route for travellers seeking onward international flights. Conditions should be checked before beginning the journey.

Azerbaijan

Ordinary passenger travel overland from Iran into Azerbaijan remains restricted. Travellers should not assume this can be used as an alternative route to reach flights from Azerbaijan.

Iraq crossings

Border conditions with Iraq can change quickly. Some crossings were temporarily closed earlier in September before reopening, illustrating the possibility of short-notice disruption.

Visa requirements

Most foreign visitors require a visa before travelling to Iran. Requirements differ by nationality, and some passport holders face additional procedures.

Detention risk

Foreign nationals and dual nationals face a risk of arrest or detention. Several governments warn that their ability to provide consular assistance inside Iran can be extremely limited.

Latest Travel Changes

International aviation disruption intensifies

New restrictions affecting Iranian airlines have sharply reduced international air connections. Several countries have suspended Iranian-airline services.

Some flights continue from Tehran

Despite the disruption, Imam Khomeini International Airport remains operational. Flights continue on some international routes, meaning Iran is not completely cut off by air.

Passengers moving to land routes

Reduced flight availability has pushed more travellers towards overland routes through Türkiye and Armenia, with congestion reported at some crossings.

Regional aviation conditions remain volatile

The continuing conflict and rapidly changing regional restrictions mean airlines can cancel or reroute flights with little notice.

Severe travel advisories remain

Official government guidance continues to advise against travel to Iran because of the conflict, security environment and detention risks.

Before You Travel

Check the latest government travel advice before making any journey to Iran.

Confirm your flight directly with the operating airline immediately before travelling. Do not rely solely on an older booking confirmation or timetable.

If planning to leave Iran overland, confirm that your intended border crossing is open before beginning the journey.

Do not assume that an open border in one direction means foreign tourists of every nationality can use the crossing.

Be prepared for flight cancellations, route changes, airspace restrictions and longer journeys at short notice.

Foreign and dual nationals should carefully review current official information about arrest, detention and consular-assistance risks.
