Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Kiribati is extremely spread out
Kiribati consists of islands and atolls spread across a vast area of the Pacific Ocean. Travelling between different parts of the country can therefore involve long distances and limited flight schedules.
Tarawa
Bonriki International Airport serves South Tarawa and is one of the country’s main international gateways. Domestic Air Kiribati services also connect Tarawa with numerous outer islands.
Kiritimati
Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, is thousands of kilometres from Tarawa. Cassidy International Airport serves the island, and travellers should not assume frequent connections exist between Kiritimati and Tarawa.
Inter-island flights
Air Kiribati operates more than 45 scheduled flights per week across its network, but many individual island routes operate only on particular days. Travellers should build flexibility into itineraries involving outer islands.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers who are visa-exempt can normally receive permission to stay on arrival subject to Kiribati’s immigration requirements.
Passport requirements
Travellers should have a passport valid for at least six months after arrival and sufficient blank pages for immigration processing.
Onward travel
Visitors may be required to show a return or onward ticket and evidence that they have sufficient funds for their stay.
Medical facilities
Healthcare facilities are limited, particularly outside Tarawa. Serious medical conditions may require evacuation to another country, so comprehensive travel insurance is particularly important.
Weather
Heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas can affect flights and boat services between islands. Travellers visiting remote islands should allow extra time for possible weather-related delays.
Road conditions
Road infrastructure is limited, particularly outside the main population centres. Flooding and poor road conditions can make local journeys slower.
Ocean safety
Strong currents, reefs and changing sea conditions can make swimming and boating dangerous in some locations. Local advice should be followed before entering unfamiliar waters.
Latest Travel Changes

No significant current nationwide flight, airport, entry or security disruption has been identified.
Domestic flights operating
Air Kiribati continues to publish an active domestic schedule covering more than 45 flights per week between Tarawa, Kiritimati and numerous outer islands.
Tarawa-Kiritimati connection remains limited
Direct travel between Tarawa and Kiritimati is limited, with scheduled nonstop service operating only around once per week. Travellers should plan connections carefully.
Security advice remains normal
Current Canadian travel guidance recommends taking normal security precautions in Kiribati.
Before You Travel
Check your airline, passport and Kiribati visa requirements before departure.
If travelling beyond Tarawa, check the Air Kiribati schedule carefully because many domestic routes operate only on certain days.
Do not assume that Tarawa and Kiritimati are easily interchangeable parts of the same itinerary. They are separated by more than 3,000 kilometres and direct flights are limited.
Allow extra time in your itinerary if visiting outer islands because weather or operational changes can delay flights and boats.
Consider comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation because advanced medical care is limited.
