What Travellers Should Know

Luxembourg Airport is open

Luxembourg Airport is operating scheduled passenger flights. However, travellers should check their flight before travelling to the airport because of recent drone-related incidents.

Recent drone disruption

Unauthorized drones were detected around Luxembourg Airport on 18 September, forcing the airport to suspend operations. Nineteen incoming flights were diverted before operations resumed at approximately 1:20am on 19 September.

Second drone incident

Another drone sighting temporarily stopped air traffic on the evening of 21 September. Flights were suspended for roughly an hour before normal operations resumed.

Germany border controls

Germany currently has temporary internal border controls on all of its land borders, including the border with Luxembourg. The current controls are scheduled to remain in place until 15 March 2027.

France border controls

France also currently has temporary internal border controls covering its border with Luxembourg. The current notification runs until 31 October 2026.

Belgium border

Ordinary Schengen travel arrangements generally apply between Luxembourg and Belgium, although travellers continuing into other countries may encounter temporary controls.

Schengen Area

Luxembourg is part of the Schengen Area. Travellers should carry appropriate identification even when travelling between Schengen countries because temporary internal border checks can occur.

Entry/Exit System

The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational. It records biometric and travel-document information for many non-EU nationals entering or leaving the Schengen Area for short stays.

90-day rule

For eligible visa-free non-EU visitors, time spent in Luxembourg counts towards the Schengen limit of 90 days within any 180-day period.

ETIAS

ETIAS is not yet a general mandatory requirement. It is scheduled to begin in the final quarter of 2026, with the exact launch date to be officially announced.
