What Travellers Should Know

Antananarivo Airport

Antananarivo International Airport is operating scheduled domestic and international passenger flights.

International flights

Current services connect Madagascar with destinations including Paris, Dubai, Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Mauritius and Réunion.

Domestic flights

Madagascar Airlines continues to operate domestic services connecting Antananarivo with destinations including Nosy Be, Morondava, Toliara, Mahajanga and Taolagnaro.

Health entry measures

Travellers should check Madagascar’s current health-entry requirements before departure. Official travel guidance was updated in September to include Ebola-related entry requirements.

Political situation

Madagascar experienced major demonstrations and political change in 2025. Conditions are currently calmer, but politically linked demonstrations remain possible and can result in road closures and transport disruption.

Crime

Robbery, theft and violent crime occur in Madagascar. Travellers should exercise additional caution after dark, in isolated areas and on some long-distance roads.

Southern and western Madagascar

Armed cattle-rustling gangs known locally as dahalo operate in parts of southern and western Madagascar. Violent incidents have occurred, although tourists are not normally the primary targets.

Road travel

Road conditions vary considerably. Some routes are poorly maintained, and long-distance road journeys can be affected by crime, breakdowns and limited emergency services.

Night travel

Travelling long distances by road after dark carries additional risks. Where possible, complete journeys during daylight hours and use reputable transport providers.

Healthcare

Medical facilities are limited, particularly outside Antananarivo. Serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to another country.

Cyclone season

Madagascar’s cyclone season normally runs from November to April. Severe storms can disrupt flights, roads and essential services during this period.

Latest Travel Changes

Flights operating normally

Antananarivo Airport continues to handle domestic and international passenger flights. The airport’s schedule on 25 September included Air France, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Airlink, Air Austral, Corsair and Madagascar Airlines services.

Health entry advice updated

UK travel guidance was updated on 9 September to add information concerning Ebola-related entry requirements.

Security situation currently calmer

The large-scale political unrest experienced in 2025 has subsided. Current Canadian guidance says transitional measures have been implemented without major unrest and conditions remain calm.

Elevated advisory remains

Canada continues to recommend exercising a high degree of caution because of crime and the potential for political instability.

U.S. advisory remains Level 2

The current U.S. State Department advisory remains Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution because of crime, unrest and health concerns.

Before You Travel

Check your airline, passport and Madagascar visa requirements before departure.

Check the latest health-entry requirements, particularly if you have recently travelled through a country affected by an Ebola outbreak.

Avoid demonstrations and large political gatherings because even peaceful events can become disruptive or violent.

Avoid unnecessary long-distance road travel after dark and use reputable transport or tour operators.

If travelling through remote parts of southern or western Madagascar, check local security conditions before departure.

Consider comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation because advanced healthcare facilities are limited.
