What Travellers Should Know
Most of Moldova remains accessible
Ordinary travel continues in Chișinău and most government-controlled areas of Moldova. There is no nationwide closure preventing tourism or normal international travel.
War in neighbouring Ukraine
Ukraine shares a long border with Moldova. The continuing war has increased regional security risks, and projectiles and debris from the conflict have previously reached Moldovan territory or airspace.
Transnistria
Transnistria is outside the control of the Moldovan government. The UK currently advises against all travel there, while the United States advises travellers to reconsider travel because of the risk of armed conflict.
Ukraine-Transnistria border closed
All border crossings between Ukraine and Transnistria are temporarily closed. Travellers should not plan to use Transnistria as a route between Moldova and Ukraine.
Ukraine border
Travel between Moldova and Ukraine is possible through internationally recognized crossing points outside Transnistria. Travellers should check the status of their intended crossing shortly before departure.
Romania border
Moldova’s crossings with Romania provide the principal overland route into the European Union. Travellers should check current border waiting times and crossing information before travelling.
Transnistria checkpoints
There is no internationally recognized border between Moldova and Transnistria, but the de facto authorities operate checkpoints. Travellers can face document checks and unpredictable requirements.
Unexploded ordnance
The current U.S. advisory warns that unexploded ordnance and old landmines remain in some parts of Moldova, including agricultural land, forests and areas near the Dniester River. Travellers should never enter marked areas.
Demonstrations
Political demonstrations periodically occur in central Chișinău and elsewhere. They are generally peaceful but travellers should avoid demonstrations and large political gatherings.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Many nationalities can visit Moldova without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Ordinary international travel continues
No significant current nationwide shutdown affecting commercial flights or ordinary tourism in government-controlled Moldova has been identified.
U.S. advisory is Level 2
The current U.S. State Department advisory rates Moldova Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, including because of unexploded ordnance and security concerns connected with Transnistria.
Canada advises increased caution
Canada currently recommends exercising a high degree of caution in Moldova because of the effects of the armed conflict in Ukraine and the risk of demonstrations and civil unrest.
Transnistria remains the main regional concern
The UK advises against all travel to Transnistria. The region remains outside the control of Moldova’s government and the security situation can change quickly.

All crossings between Ukraine and Transnistria remain temporarily closed, with no confirmed reopening date.

If travelling overland between Moldova and Ukraine, use an internationally recognized crossing outside Transnistria and confirm that it is operating before departure.

Remain alert near the Ukrainian border and monitor local authorities and reliable news sources for security developments.
