What Travellers Should Know

Montenegro is operating normally

Ordinary tourism, international flights and road travel continue throughout Montenegro. No major nationwide disruption has been identified.

Podgorica Airport

Podgorica Airport is one of Montenegro’s two principal international airports and serves the capital and much of the country’s interior.

Tivat Airport

Tivat Airport is an important gateway for travellers visiting the Bay of Kotor and Montenegro’s Adriatic coast. Airports can become particularly busy during the tourist season.

Montenegro is not in Schengen

Montenegro is not part of the Schengen Area. Passport and immigration checks therefore apply when crossing between Montenegro and neighbouring Schengen countries.

Entry/Exit System

The EU Entry/Exit System is operating at external Schengen borders. Travellers subject to the system may need additional time when crossing between Montenegro and a Schengen country such as Croatia.

Croatia border

The main road crossing between Montenegro and Croatia is at Debeli Brijeg. Travellers should allow additional time for border formalities, particularly during busy travel periods.

Other land borders

Montenegro has international road crossings with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo and Serbia. Travellers should check conditions at their intended crossing before departure.

Seasonal road restrictions

Temporary traffic restrictions remain in force on some Montenegrin roads until 15 October 2026. These particularly affect certain buses, camper vehicles and heavy vehicles on specified routes.

Kotor area

Traffic restrictions apply on parts of the road network around Kotor during the tourist season. Travellers using buses, camper vehicles or larger vehicles should check the applicable restrictions before travelling.

Driving

Roads through mountainous areas can be narrow and winding. Heavy tourist traffic can also cause congestion along the Adriatic coast, particularly around Kotor, Budva and Tivat.

Registering your stay

Foreign visitors must register their stay in Montenegro. Hotels and registered tourist accommodation normally complete this automatically for their guests.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Many visitors can stay in Montenegro visa-free for short periods, but travellers should check the rules applying to their passport before departure.
