Myanmar Status

DISRUPTION

Commercial flights continue to operate, but travel across Myanmar is severely affected by ongoing armed conflict, security restrictions, unpredictable land-border conditions and severe official travel warnings.

Current Travel Conditions

Flights
LIMITED
International and domestic commercial flights continue, but the conflict and security situation can affect routes and travel plans at short notice.
Airports
WATCH
Yangon International Airport is operating international and domestic passenger services, but conditions elsewhere in the country vary considerably.
Entry
RESTRICTIONS
A visa is required and must generally be obtained before travel. Entry permission does not guarantee unrestricted movement within Myanmar.
Borders
DISRUPTION
Land-border travel is highly unpredictable. Crossings can close with little or no notice and some are restricted to local nationals or specific areas.
Travel Warnings
SEVERE WARNINGS
Several governments advise against travel to Myanmar because of armed conflict, arbitrary detention, terrorism, kidnapping, landmines and civil unrest.

What Travellers Should Know

Armed conflict continues

Armed conflict continues across significant parts of Myanmar. Fighting can involve airstrikes, artillery and ground operations, and conditions can change rapidly.

Yangon Airport remains open

Myanmar is not completely closed by air. Yangon International Airport continues to handle international passenger airlines from Terminal 1 and domestic airlines from Terminal 3.

Severe regional restrictions

Large areas of Myanmar are subject to severe official travel warnings. These include several border states and conflict-affected areas in central and southern Myanmar.

Land borders

Travel through Myanmar’s land borders is particularly unpredictable. Crossing points can close without warning, operating hours can change and some crossings may only permit nationals of neighbouring countries or local border traffic.

Thailand, China and India borders

Myanmar has important land routes connecting it with Thailand, China and India, but conflict and government restrictions mean travellers should never assume a particular crossing is open to foreign tourists.

Internal travel restrictions

Movement within Myanmar is tightly controlled in some areas. Foreign travellers can be prevented from entering certain regions, and permits may be required.

Landmines

Unmarked landmines and unexploded ordnance are a serious danger, particularly in conflict and border regions. Travellers should not leave established roads and paths in affected areas.

Arbitrary detention

Foreign nationals can face arbitrary arrest or detention. Authorities may also inspect electronic devices and personal communications.

Demonstrations

Political demonstrations and gatherings can become violent. Security forces have previously used lethal force against protesters.

Visa required

Travellers generally require a visa before entering Myanmar. Tourist e-visas remain available for eligible nationalities, but obtaining a visa does not guarantee entry.

Banking problems

Myanmar remains heavily dependent on cash. Banking services are disrupted and international bank cards may not work reliably.

Latest Travel Changes

Commercial flights continue

Yangon International Airport confirms that international airlines continue to operate from Terminal 1 and domestic airlines from Terminal 3.

U.S. Level 4 warning remains

The current U.S. State Department advisory is Level 4: Do Not Travel because of armed conflict, unrest, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, poor health infrastructure, landmines, unexploded ordnance and crime.

Canada advises against all travel

Canada’s guidance, updated on 24 September 2026, continues to advise avoiding all travel to Myanmar because of armed conflict, politically motivated violence, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary detention and civil unrest.

Border conflict continues

Armed clashes continue in several regions bordering Thailand, China, Laos, Bangladesh and India. Land-border conditions can change without warning.

UK regional warnings remain extensive

Current UK guidance advises against all travel to numerous states and regions and against all but essential travel to several additional areas because of the continuing conflict.

Before You Travel

Check the latest official travel warnings before considering travel to Myanmar.

Confirm that your intended airline and airport are operating before departure.

Obtain the appropriate visa before travelling and check whether your intended port of entry accepts your visa type.

Do not assume that a land-border crossing is open. Check the status of the exact crossing shortly before travel.

Check whether permission is required before travelling outside major cities or into restricted areas.

Avoid demonstrations, military installations, security forces and areas where fighting is occurring.

Never leave established roads or paths in conflict-affected areas because of the risk from landmines and unexploded ordnance.

Prepare for limited banking access and do not rely solely on international payment cards.
