WATCH
Ordinary travel to Nepal continues, including international flights and tourism. However, severe flood and landslide damage is currently affecting Rasuwa and parts of the Nepal-China border region, with transport and communications disrupted in affected areas.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Most of Nepal remains accessible
Ordinary tourism continues in Kathmandu and most major tourist areas. The current severe disruption is concentrated primarily in flood and landslide-affected areas of northern Nepal.
Rasuwa flooding
Major flash flooding and landslides struck Rasuwa district on 26 August 2026, causing deaths, widespread infrastructure damage and disruption to roads, communications and essential services.
Nepal-China border
The Rasuwagadhi-Timure-Syafrubesi area, including the Nepal-China border crossing, has been severely affected. Travellers should not attempt to use this route without checking the latest official information.
Further landslide risk
Damaged and unstable slopes remain a concern in Rasuwa and surrounding districts. Additional heavy rain or seismic activity could trigger further landslides and rockfalls.
Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha
Flooding and landslides have also affected downstream areas including Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha. Transport infrastructure and essential services may remain disrupted in some locations.
Tribhuvan International Airport
Kathmandu’s main international airport is operating. Travellers should nevertheless confirm their individual flight before departure because weather and regional aviation disruption can cause changes.
Visa on arrival
Many foreign visitors can obtain a tourist visa on arrival in Nepal. Visa eligibility depends on nationality, so travellers should check the rule applying to their passport before departure.
Passport validity
Travellers should generally have a passport valid for at least six months from their date of entry into Nepal.
India border
Nepal has numerous land crossings with India. Travellers should use official international crossing points and confirm that their intended crossing is available to foreign nationals.
Trekking
Mountain weather can change extremely quickly. Travellers planning trekking or mountaineering should check current trail conditions, permits, weather forecasts and local restrictions before setting out.
Demonstrations and strikes
Political demonstrations, protests and strikes occur periodically in Nepal. They can begin with little warning and sometimes disrupt roads and public transport.
