What Travellers Should Know

Ordinary travel continues

Nicaragua remains accessible to international visitors. Commercial flights, airports and principal tourist routes continue to operate.

U.S. Level 3 advisory

The United States currently rates Nicaragua Level 3: Reconsider Travel because of crime, health risks, wrongful detention and arbitrary enforcement of local laws.

Risk of detention

Foreign nationals can be detained or expelled and authorities can deny entry. Travellers should understand local laws and avoid activities that could attract the attention of authorities.

Demonstrations

Political demonstrations and other large gatherings can occur with little warning. Previous demonstrations have resulted in violence, arrests and disruption to roads and public transport.

Avoid demonstrations

Travellers should avoid demonstrations and large political gatherings and follow instructions from local authorities.

Managua Airport

Augusto C. Sandino International Airport remains Nicaragua’s main international gateway. Scheduled international flights are operating.

International flight connections

Current September schedules show direct passenger services between Managua and destinations including Miami, Houston, Mexico City, Panama City and San Salvador.

Entry requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers should check the requirements applying to their passport before departure and should not assume that having a visa or visa-free status guarantees admission.

Passport validity

Current UK guidance states that passports should have at least six months of validity remaining when entering Nicaragua.

Onward travel

Immigration officials may ask travellers to provide evidence of onward or return travel.

Yellow fever

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from certain countries with a yellow fever transmission risk.

CA-4 area

Nicaragua is part of the Central America-4 border arrangement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. For eligible visitors, the permitted period of stay is shared across the participating countries rather than restarting every time a border is crossed.

Road travel

Driving after dark can be hazardous because of poor lighting, road conditions, pedestrians and animals on roads. Extra caution is advisable outside major urban areas.
