What Travellers Should Know

Commercial travel continues

Saudi Arabia has not closed to international travellers. Commercial flights continue and the country’s major international airports remain operational.

Recent attacks on Saudi territory

Saudi Arabia has experienced renewed drone and missile attacks during the current regional escalation. Travellers should be prepared for security alerts and sudden changes to transport arrangements.

Riyadh recently affected

A missile attack targeting Riyadh on 19 September caused significant delays and several cancellations at King Khalid International Airport. Operations subsequently recovered, but the incident demonstrates the potential for sudden aviation disruption.

Airspace remains open

Saudi airspace remains open overall. Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah continue to handle commercial passenger flights.

Flights can change quickly

Regional conflict can result in airlines changing routes, delaying flights or cancelling services with little notice. Travellers should check their individual flight shortly before travelling to the airport.

Yemen border

The Yemen border presents a particularly serious security risk. Current U.S. guidance says not to travel to the border area because of terrorism and armed conflict.

Southern Saudi Arabia

Canadian guidance advises against all travel to the provinces of Asir, Jazan and Najran because of the risk of armed strikes, drone attacks and debris from intercepted weapons.

Riyadh, Jeddah and other cities

Major cities remain open and ordinary commercial activity continues, but travellers should follow official security alerts and know what to do if authorities issue instructions to take shelter.

Makkah and Madinah

The holy cities remain accessible to eligible Muslim visitors with appropriate Saudi entry permission. No nationwide closure of Makkah or Madinah is currently in effect.

Makkah restrictions

Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering Makkah. Additional access rules can also apply during the Hajj period.

Entry requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality and reason for travel. Eligible travellers may be able to use Saudi Arabia’s tourist eVisa system.

Local laws

Saudi laws and social rules differ significantly from those in many other countries. Travellers should familiarize themselves with local restrictions before arrival.

Social media

Current U.S. guidance specifically warns that travellers can face legal consequences for social media activity considered illegal under Saudi law.
