What Travellers Should Know

Ordinary travel continues

There is no significant current nationwide disruption affecting ordinary tourism, international flights or entry into Senegal.

Dakar

Ordinary tourism and commercial activity continue in Dakar. Travellers should nevertheless take precautions against theft and violent crime, particularly after dark.

Crime

Pickpocketing, bag snatching, robbery and other crime occur, particularly in larger cities and busy public areas. Violent crime can also occur, especially at night.

Casamance

The security situation in Casamance has improved following the February 2025 peace agreement between the Senegalese government and certain armed groups, but security concerns have not completely disappeared.

Landmines in Casamance

Landmines remain a risk in parts of Casamance. Travellers should remain on main roads and avoid unexplored or isolated areas.

Tourist areas of Casamance

The risk of armed clashes is lower in the main tourist areas of Casamance than in remote locations, particularly those close to international borders.

Mali border

Travellers should take particular care in remote eastern areas near Mali. Armed groups operate in neighbouring Mali and have carried out deadly attacks close to Senegal’s border.

Mauritania border

Additional care is recommended in remote northern areas close to Mauritania because border regions can be isolated and security assistance limited.

Demonstrations

Political demonstrations and strikes occur in Senegal, particularly in Dakar and other major cities. Even peaceful demonstrations can become disruptive and can block roads or affect public transport.

Entry requirements

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travellers should confirm the requirements applying to their passport before departure.

Return or onward travel

Immigration officials may ask visitors to show evidence of return or onward travel and proof of accommodation.

Yellow fever

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from countries considered to have a risk of yellow fever transmission, including certain airport transits.

Rainy season

Senegal’s rainy season generally runs from July to October. Heavy rain can make some roads outside major cities difficult to use.
