What Travellers Should Know

Temporary checks at the French border

France currently maintains temporary internal Schengen border controls covering its border with Spain. Travellers crossing between France and Spain should carry the appropriate travel documents and allow for possible checks or delays.

Spain and Italy travel

Italy currently has temporary controls covering internal air and sea borders with Spain. These controls are scheduled to remain in place through 1 October 2026. Travellers flying or travelling by sea between Spain and Italy should keep passports or other accepted travel documents readily available.

Spain’s own temporary controls have ended

Spain temporarily introduced controls on internal air and sea borders with Italy earlier in September. That measure ran through 22 September 2026 and is no longer listed as an active Spanish border control.

Flights and airports

Spain’s extensive international and domestic aviation network continues to operate. Major airports including Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga and Alicante remain open and operational.

Entry into Spain

Normal Schengen entry requirements apply. Travellers should check passport validity, visa requirements and any travel authorization requirements applicable to their nationality before departure.

Latest Travel Changes

Temporary Schengen border controls remain relevant

Spain’s own temporary controls involving Italy ended on 22 September 2026. However, travellers can still encounter checks because France currently maintains controls covering its border with Spain through 31 October 2026, while Italy has temporary controls on internal air and sea borders with Spain through 1 October 2026.

No nationwide aviation disruption identified

Commercial aviation and Spain’s major airports continue to operate. Earlier aviation disruptions and strikes should not be treated as current nationwide disruption unless they affect a traveller’s specific flight.
