Sudan Status
DISRUPTION
Travel to Sudan remains severely affected by ongoing armed conflict. Commercial flights operate through Khartoum and Port Sudan, but security conditions, road travel and access across parts of the country remain highly unpredictable. Multiple governments advise against all travel to Sudan.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Sudan remains in active conflict
The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces continues. The intensity of fighting varies considerably by region, with particularly serious conflict affecting parts of Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile.
Khartoum has become more accessible
Security conditions in Khartoum have improved compared with earlier stages of the war and commercial flights have returned to Khartoum International Airport. However, the wider situation remains volatile and conditions can change rapidly.
Commercial flights are operating
Sudan is not completely closed to commercial aviation. Khartoum and Port Sudan currently handle passenger flights, including domestic and some international services. Travellers should confirm individual flights directly before departure because operations remain vulnerable to security developments.
Road travel can be dangerous or impossible
Movement between areas controlled by different armed groups can involve checkpoints, detention risks and sudden restrictions. Road conditions and security vary significantly across the country.
Darfur and Kordofan
These regions continue to experience some of Sudan’s most serious fighting and insecurity. Conditions in individual towns and transport corridors can change quickly.
Latest Travel Changes
Commercial aviation has partially recovered
Khartoum International Airport has resumed passenger operations after being largely unusable during earlier stages of the war. Domestic flights now connect Khartoum with locations including Port Sudan, while some international services have also returned.
Port Sudan remains an international gateway
International connectivity through Port Sudan has improved during 2026. Qatar Airways launched Doha services and EgyptAir resumed regular Cairo-Port Sudan flights.
Conflict continues despite changes in territorial control
Fighting has decreased substantially in some areas including Khartoum, while major conflict continues elsewhere. Sudan therefore remains severely disrupted even though travel conditions are not identical across the entire country.
Before You Travel
Check the latest government travel advice and understand that multiple governments currently advise against all travel to Sudan.
Confirm your flight directly with the airline before travelling because schedules and airport operations can change quickly.
Confirm current visa and entry requirements before departure.
Do not assume that improved conditions in Khartoum or Port Sudan mean that overland routes elsewhere in Sudan are safe or accessible.
Check the security situation for your exact destination and route immediately before any journey within Sudan.
