What Travellers Should Know

France-Switzerland border controls

France currently maintains temporary internal Schengen controls covering its border with Switzerland. These controls are scheduled to remain in place through 31 October 2026. Travellers should carry valid travel documents and allow for possible checks.

Germany-Switzerland border controls

Germany currently has temporary controls on its land border with Switzerland. The current measure runs through 15 March 2027, meaning travellers crossing between the two countries may be stopped for document checks.

Flights and airports

Switzerland’s major airports continue to operate and no significant nationwide aviation disruption has been identified. Travellers should still check their individual flight before travelling to the airport.

Entry requirements

Switzerland is part of the Schengen area. Passport, visa and permitted-stay requirements depend on nationality. The Schengen Entry/Exit System is also being used for affected travellers entering and leaving the Schengen area.

Mountain travel

Weather and road conditions can change quickly in the Alps. Travellers heading into mountainous areas should check local weather, road and transport conditions before departure.

Latest Travel Changes

Temporary border controls remain active

France currently maintains temporary controls on its border with Switzerland through 31 October 2026. Germany’s temporary controls on its land border with Switzerland are currently scheduled to continue through 15 March 2027.

No major nationwide travel disruption identified

International flights, airports and ordinary tourism continue to operate normally. Switzerland’s WATCH status is primarily due to the current temporary border controls rather than a disruption to travel within the country.

Before You Travel

Check your airline and individual flight status before travelling to the airport.

Confirm the passport and visa requirements that apply to your nationality.

Carry valid travel documents when crossing between Switzerland and neighbouring Schengen countries, particularly France and Germany, because temporary border controls are currently in force.

Check local weather and transport conditions before travelling through mountainous areas.
