Tanzania Status
WATCH
Travel to Tanzania continues normally in most tourist areas, with commercial flights and major airports operating. However, a new mandatory inbound travel-insurance requirement for covered foreign visitors to mainland Tanzania took effect on 1 October 2026. Health screening also affects some arrivals, while severe localized security warnings remain in place near the Mozambique border.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
New mainland travel-insurance requirement
From 1 October 2026, covered foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania by air, land or sea must obtain the prescribed inbound travel insurance. Travellers should arrange the required policy and confirm that they have the necessary proof of cover before travelling.
Insurance cost and duration
The standard adult premium is the Tanzanian-shilling equivalent of US$44. The policy provides coverage for stays of up to 92 days.
Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar
The new requirement applies to mainland Tanzania. Zanzibar already operates its own mandatory inbound travel-insurance system. Travellers visiting both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar should check the current official insurance requirements for their itinerary and point of entry before travelling.
Current health screening
Tanzania has heightened health screening for travellers arriving from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo because of the current Ebola situation. Mpox temperature screening also applies at points of entry. Travellers arriving from affected areas should allow additional time for health checks.
Zanzibar mandatory insurance
Foreign visitors entering Zanzibar are subject to its mandatory inbound travel-insurance requirements. Travellers heading to Zanzibar should check the current Zanzibar insurance rules before arrival.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Tanzania operates an official eVisa system, while eligible travellers can obtain certain single-entry tourist or business visas on arrival at main ports of entry. Travellers should check the rules for their passport before departure.
Mozambique border
There are serious security concerns in the far south near Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. Armed extremist groups operate across the border in Mozambique and there is a risk of cross-border violence. This warning does not apply to Tanzania’s main safari destinations, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam or most other tourist areas.
Flights and airports
Commercial aviation continues to operate normally. Tanzania’s principal international gateways remain open, and no significant nationwide aviation disruption has been identified.
