What Travellers Should Know

Most tourist areas remain accessible

Ordinary tourism continues in destinations including Tunis and Tunisia’s main coastal resort areas. The strongest government warnings are concentrated in particular border, mountain and military areas rather than applying equally across the country.

Algerian border

Security warnings apply to parts of western Tunisia close to Algeria because of terrorism risks and continuing counter-terrorism operations. Travellers planning an overland journey should check the specific route and crossing before departure.

Libyan border

Security conditions near Libya are considerably more sensitive. Strong travel warnings apply to areas close to the border, and crossings between Tunisia and Libya can close at short notice when the security situation changes.

Military and mountain areas

Parts of Kasserine and several mountain areas are subject to strong warnings because of counter-terrorism operations. Travellers should not enter designated military zones.

Flights and airports

Commercial aviation continues to operate. Tunis-Carthage, Monastir and Tunisia’s other major tourist airports continue to handle passenger flights, with no significant nationwide aviation disruption currently identified.

Latest Travel Changes

Localized security restrictions remain in force

Government travel warnings remain in place for specified areas near Tunisia’s borders with Algeria and Libya and for several military and mountainous areas. These restrictions do not represent a nationwide closure of Tunisia to travellers.

Libya border remains vulnerable to sudden changes

The Tunisia-Libya border remains particularly sensitive to developments inside Libya. Individual crossings can be affected or closed at short notice if security conditions deteriorate.

No nationwide aviation disruption identified

Scheduled international flights continue to operate. Tunisia’s WATCH classification is therefore primarily due to localized security and border conditions rather than disruption at its main airports or tourist destinations.

Before You Travel

Check the visa and passport requirements that apply to your nationality before departure.

Check current government warnings for the specific part of Tunisia you intend to visit, particularly if travelling to western or southern regions.

If travelling overland to or from Algeria or Libya, verify that your intended border crossing is open and that your route does not pass through an area covered by a severe travel warning.

Avoid designated military zones and areas where security operations are taking place.

Check your airline and individual flight status before travelling to the airport.
