Uzbekistan Status
WATCH
Travel to Uzbekistan is operating normally across most of the country, including international flights and major tourist destinations. However, the Afghanistan land border remains closed to foreign travellers and severe localized security warnings apply close to that border.
Current Travel Conditions
What Travellers Should Know
Afghanistan border
The land border between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan remains officially closed to foreign travellers. The border area is heavily guarded and travellers should stay away from restricted military and border zones.
Severe localized warning
Official Canadian guidance advises against all travel within 5 km of the Afghanistan border because of the security situation and terrorism risk. This warning does not apply to Uzbekistan’s main tourist destinations such as Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan borders
Cross-border travel with neighbouring Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is possible, but individual crossings can be restricted without warning. Travellers planning an overland journey should confirm that their intended crossing is open before departure.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements vary by nationality. Many visitors can enter Uzbekistan without a visa for a limited stay, while travellers who require a visa can use Uzbekistan’s electronic visa system where eligible.
Registration after arrival
Foreign visitors staying more than three days generally need to be registered with the local authorities. Hotels normally complete this registration for their guests.
Latest Travel Changes
U.S. citizens now have visa-free access
From 1 January 2026, U.S. citizens can visit Uzbekistan without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, expanding Uzbekistan’s visa-free travel arrangements.
Afghanistan crossing remains closed to foreigners
The Friendship Bridge crossing between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan remains officially closed to foreign travellers. Security restrictions also remain in force in the surrounding border area.
Ordinary tourism continues normally
No significant nationwide aviation, airport or entry disruption has been identified. Uzbekistan’s WATCH classification is therefore primarily due to the Afghanistan border situation rather than disruption affecting the country’s principal tourist destinations.
Before You Travel
Check whether your nationality qualifies for visa-free entry or requires an eVisa or other visa before departure.
Keep records of your accommodation registration during your stay, particularly if staying outside conventional hotels.
Do not attempt to cross into Afghanistan or approach restricted areas along the Afghanistan border.
If travelling overland to Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan or Turkmenistan, confirm that your intended border crossing is open to foreign travellers.
Check your airline and individual flight status before travelling to the airport.
