My Experience with Thai Girls was the Opposite of what I was Told
Stereotypes are a normal, and one may even argue necessary part of the human experience. As we navigate through this world, generalizations help set a standard of how to conduct ourselves when interacting with different types of people.
But very unfortunately though, many stereotypes tend to be unfairly negative. In other words, you can’t judge a whole group of people by a few questionable apples. But it’s those same types of characters who tend to stick out most and define a group in the minds of those who don’t know them.
Also remember that despite how “interconnected” the world may be today, it’s still a pretty big place. Take Asia for example. India and China are border countries, but the average Indian, as we know them, does not resemble a typical Chinaman, at all. And when it comes to the Southeast Asian region, it’s common for us foreigners to get nationalities mixed up. There’s even a memorable line from one of the Rush Hour films, starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, where the former, a Chinaman, is compelled to correct the latter after he confuses him for a Korean.
THAILAND’S APPEAL TO CERTAIN MALE TOURISTS
I bring all of that up because first of all, Southeast Asia has developed a reputation as arguably the premiere adult nightlife tourism region in the world. And Thailand is one of the countries which, unfairly or not, is considered to be at the center of that practice. Many dudes who are not able to fulfill their intimate fantasies at home are attracted to places like Thailand. In fact, it’s been said that Thailand attracts more adult-oriented tourists than conventional ones.
Moreover, Thailand has what may be described as a robust mail-order bride industry. I’m not going to judge anybody for how they go about obtaining a spouse or achieving upward social mobility. Some men rather just pay for a bride than court one, and some ladies may be willing to sell themselves in the name of obtaining a visa. As a friend of mine used to say, ‘it is what it is’.
But all of that sucks when it comes to the international reputation of Thai women. When you come from a country that attracts johns from all over the world, besides having a bustling mail-order bride sector, then of course women from that locality are going to be perceived as relatively uninhibited. And there tends to be a bunch of other negative beliefs associated with those stereotypes.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH THAI GIRLS
Prostitution is everywhere you go. Especially as a foreign dude from a richer nation visiting a poorer one, you’re bound to come in contact with women who are interested in you mainly in the name of financial opportunity. And truth be told, I was expecting most eligible Thai women I came across to be along those lines.
But my actual experiences with them have proven otherwise. What I discovered, in real-time if you will, is that Thai women are amongst some of the most modest in the world.
Upon actually visiting Thailand, you’ll observe that a noticeable number of them are hardworking, to the point of being employed in male-dominated fields, such as construction or other forms of manual labor. These same women could, if they wanted to, go the adult service route. Adult-oriented work may be more or less illegal in Thailand, but it is still widely practiced. But if you come across a population of women who, generally speaking, would rather toil under the sun than sell themselves, that should let you know right there they aren’t money-grubbing whores. And in terms of those Thai girls who do decide to become working girls, they make that decision based on economic factors, not being naturally loose.
Thai women are also super friendly, respectable and accommodating. Dealing with them is a refreshing respite from Western ladies, who based on my experience tend to habitually rude and defensive.
Relatively speaking, Thai culture is traditional, with females being socialized more along the lines of family-oriented caretakers than independent women. That’s one of the best aspects of interacting with girls from Thailand, i.e. their style not being overly modernized.
PRACTICALITIES OF THAI ADULT NIGHTLIFE
But that said, a noticeable number of Thai women are also actively involved in the nightlife-focused industry. And of course, they’re more pronounced in areas where tourism is common. So as a foreigner, you’re going to have the opportunity to interact with them also.
And needless to say, if you venture into one of the nation’s red light districts, you’ll be surrounded by businesspeople who facilitate such services. “Everyone has to make a living”, as the old saying goes. But only a small percentage of Thai women are engaged in the adult services industry.
So ultimately, the ball (no pun intended) is in your court as an eligible male visiting Thailand. You can use the opportunity to meet the woman of your dreams, the type you probably wouldn’t come across at home. Or you may be one of those guys who came to the country for adult-oriented tourism and conduct yourself accordingly.
CONCLUSION
Stereotypes are a very, very odd thing because on one hand, they exist for a reason. I mean they can sometimes serve as rough warnings that help people navigate unfamiliar places and avoid uncomfortable or risky situations. But the problem begins when those stereotypes are taken out of context and applied too broadly, especially to entire groups of people.
Thailand’s global image has long been shaped by the visibility of its adult entertainment industry, and that visibility has without a doubt played a role in how outsiders form their opinions. However, what I can assure you is that visibility does not equal representation.
What is often highlighted internationally is only one narrow slice of a much larger and more complex society. As travelers and as mature individuals, it’s important to separate what is visible from what is typical. I personally think that making the leap from acknowledging the existence of commercial sex work to assuming that all Thai women share the same attitudes or behaviors makes no sense. In reality, the opposite is often true.
If you have ever visited Thailand you notice that the Thai society places strong value on family and respect, especially outside of tourist-heavy areas.
That being said, just like anywhere else in the world, you can meet people who are interested in casual encounters, and you can also meet women who are deeply traditional, family-oriented, and of course looking for lifelong partners. So reducing Thai women to a single narrative does a disservice not only to them, but also to anyone trying to genuinely understand the country. Context matters a lot in every situation. And most importantly, people deserve to be seen as individuals rather than stereotypes.
