What Every Swiss Traveler Should Know Before Boarding a Plane
Leo Meier is a 31-year-old software engineer from Zürich who loves hiking in the Alps, fondue in the winter… and traveling somewhere warm whenever the snow starts to pile up. This year, he set his sights on Vietnam, planning a 10-day escape full of street food, beaches and motorbike adventures.
He had one thing on his side – his Swiss passport, which is one of the strongest in the world.
“With this, I can go anywhere,” Leo thought.
Well… almost anywhere.
The eVisa Surprise
Three days before his flight, Leo decided to casually check Vietnam’s entry rules. That’s when he saw it: Swiss citizens need an eVisa to enter Vietnam. Panic instantly set in. He scrambled through forums, embassy sites, and finally found some relevant information online.
Luckily, Vietnam’s eVisa system was fast, and he got his approval the next day. Leo printed two copies, saved the PDF on his phone, and swore never to leave visa research for the last minute again.
Leo’s tip: “Don’t assume your passport takes you everywhere. Always check and apply for an eVisa at least a week ahead.”
Landing in a Visa-on-Arrival Country
Two months later, Leo was off to Nepal for a hiking trip. This time he was ready. Nepal currently offers Visa on Arrival for Swiss citizens.
He landed in Kathmandu… but saw a long queue at the VoA desk. People were fumbling with their credit cards. Not Leo.
He pulled out:
- USD in cash
- A passport-sized photo
- A filled-out arrival card
- And his passport, valid for another 10 months
Smooth and done in 15 minutes.
Leo’s tip: “For Visa on Arrival, bring cash and a passport photo. Don’t rely on card machines — they fail more often than you’d think.”
Even When It’s Visa-Free…
Later that year, Leo took a spontaneous trip to Mexico, a visa-free destination for Swiss passport holders. At the airport, immigration asked for the following:
- Proof of accommodation
- A return ticket
- And enough funds for his stay
He was lucky to have booked everything in advance. If he hadn’t, the trip could’ve ended before it began.
Leo’s tip: “Visa-free doesn’t mean paperwork-free. Always have documents that prove you’re a legit traveler.”
