Good news for everyone in the UAE because a long weekend is officially on the way. Both the public and private sectors will enjoy a three-day break starting Friday, September 5, 2025, to mark Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday (PBUH).

What Has Been Announced

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation confirmed that Friday, September 5, will be a public holiday for the private sector. This announcement came right after the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources declared the same day off for the public sector.

On top of that, Dubai’s Government Human Resources Department followed up with a circular confirming that all local government departments, entities, and institutions will observe the holiday as well.

With Saturday and Sunday already being the official weekend for most of the UAE, this extra Friday off means residents can look forward to a full three-day weekend.

Why the Date Changes Each Year

Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday is one of the key Islamic occasions observed in the UAE, and its exact date shifts every year because it’s tied to the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. It always falls on the 12th day of the month of Rabi’ Al-Awwal, which this year began on Monday, August 25, after the crescent moon was sighted on Sunday, August 24.

That’s why residents often have to wait until official moon-sighting announcements before confirming the exact holiday date.

What It Means for Residents and Travelers

For locals and expats, a long weekend means more time with family, a chance to recharge, or even a quick getaway within the UAE or to a nearby destination. Hotels and resorts across Dubai and Abu Dhabi (two of the most visited cities in the UAE) are already expected to roll out special weekend offers, while tourist attractions are likely to see a spike in visitors.

For travelers planning to visit the UAE, this is also a time when many public spaces may be busier than usual. However, it also gives residents and visitors the chance to experience the country’s cultural and spiritual side during an important Islamic occasion.

A Moment of Reflection

Of course, for many of us the first thought is, “Great, a long weekend!” But it’s worth remembering that this day is a lot more than just time off work. Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday is one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar. It’s a day that’s meant to be observed with respect and reflection.

Families often spend it together, mosques hold special prayers, and the focus is on community. Yes, malls, beaches, and restaurants will definitely be busy, which is just life in the UAE during a holiday. But at the heart of it, this day is about honoring a tradition that has shaped the culture of the Emirates for generations.

Fun Things to Do in the UAE Over the Long Weekend

If you’re wondering what to do with the extra day off, let me throw out a few ideas:

  • Hit the beach: JBR in Dubai or Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi are always good choices. Pack some snacks, grab your friends or family, and just chill by the water.

  • Go for a desert safari: nothing beats dune bashing, riding a camel, and watching the sun drop over the sand before digging into a BBQ dinner under the stars.

  • Book a staycation: hotels love to roll out deals on long weekends. It’s one of the best times to treat yourself without even leaving the city.

  • Shop till you drop: the malls are going to be packed, no doubt about that. But if you love sales, Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, and Yas Mall will keep you busy.

  • Soak in the culture: if you’d rather do something slower, check out the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi or wander around Dubai’s Al Fahidi Historical District.

  • Theme park thrills: Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, or Motiongate are perfect if you’ve got kids or just want to let loose.

  • Try a dhow cruise: a dinner cruise along Dubai Creek or the Marina is always a vibe, especially with the skyline lit up at night.

  • Take a road trip: head out of the city for a change of pace. Fujairah has beaches and mountains, while Ras Al Khaimah is great for hiking and adventure.
